"in general, man's calling is to "subdue the earth". basically, this
means learning about the laws of nature, the resources that are
available, etc., and putting these things to use for good purposes. this is such an innate part of us as humans that we tend to pursue
these ends even if it doesn't flow out of a "philosophy" of work."
stan reeves, the spirituality of work
working is cathartic. the benefits of physical labor are immediately noticeable, both physically and mentally. mentally it's like a daily devotion, providing ample time to reflect on things, to allow all the confusion of life to settle in the stillness of your mind in the same way sand settles in a still body of water. with an unobstructed view certain things can come to light and you can see for miles. suddenly there is perspective on things. perhaps you find yourself at peace during your labors. there is a satisfaction that comes with an honest day's work and like a good meal or really good lovemaking this can't be bullshitted. this is a beautiful thing that comes with time and practice.
physically several things usually happen. with exertion, muscle fibers tear and as they heal they become larger. as you become stronger the way you work becomes more fluid. as time goes on everything will work as one. the way you move is executed in an efficient and beautiful fashion. unloading a tractor trailer becomes an art form. you may notice a slight euphoria resulting from the release of endorphins, your body's own endogenous morphine. breathing falls into a metronomic rhythm. you begin to carry yourself with a confident bearing. these things aren't easy to achieve but feel so good when they start to happen.
work heals. as you exert and the mind empties, troubles and worries start to lose their negative qualifiers. it's good to go home after an honest day's work and not feel the weight of the world crushing you. it's a proactive approach to life and one of best things you can have.
